C. S. Lewis

"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad."

Wynsome

In my world-Serrifis, the setting for many of my stories-there is a quirky little city state called Wynsome. It is positioned in a low mountain range between the northern plains, the wasteland, and the exotic southern countries and elfin holdings.  Such a mish mosh of cultures, tradesmen, travelors and misfits from every direction could be found in Wynsome it was certain that you would receive a shock of some sort as you walked down the road. It was, so to speak, commonplace for strange things to happen there.

For this reason I dubbed my college dorm room, well, me and my roommates, really, "Wynsome." We were three extremely different people (but, in some ways very similar) who'd been thrown together by chance and became a tight knit icon on our tiny campus. The name stuck and most of campus knew us as Wynsome.

Our room had a few girly flourishes--nail polish, candles, icicle lights and Edmund Blair Leighton's Godspeed and Accolade, and one artistic fashion drawing, but on the whole none of us were "girly" or particularly domestic (Although, there was that one time that we made quesodillas with the iron to celebrate Cinco de Mayo).  Forget lacey accoutriments, I would've hung a sword on the wall if I could have kept one on campus. The best part is that neither mon Capitan or the Pianist would have minded, even though neither of them would've dreamed of hanging a sword on the wall. Though, my perfect world would have probably involved some lace, and a sword on the wall. Maybe that's why we stayed roommates as long as we could and will be friends ever after.

We had pictures of giraffes, flowers, horses, various clever greeting cards, and Lord of the Rings posters.  We had a flourescent light up mushroom in the window (until it broke over the summer in storage) and were known to traipse merrily around campus after dark in capes to destress. We were also very serious people who worked very hard on our studies (mon Capitan and I even accidentally "broke" in a moot court competition we did for extra credit.) and even got involved with student politics.

We went to each other's recitations, auditions, recitals, and stuck it through good times and bad. Borrowed shoes, nail polish and hair gel.  Proofed papers, talked late into the night, and did almost nothing together academically or extracurricular after we were done with our sophmore year. (Remember how I said we were different? Mon Capitan sang, the Pianist played piano, and I made movies.)

After graduation we did our utmost to go to each other's weddings, cross country or not, and no matter how long we're apart it's just like old times when we're back together.

Just like old times. Only better.

Wynsome will always have a fond place in my stories, mentioned as a urban legend, lore, rumor, freaky travel story by the characters in my stories. Technically, the little town came first, but now the college roomies define it.

yesterday: the pianist, the dragonslayer and the Captain, together for the first time after our weddings
P.S. Happy First Anniversary to the Pianist!
