C. S. Lewis

"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad."

Resolutions

I was never the New Years Resolution type. Not quite, anyway. In my head the whole resolution and subsequent failure thing was too sterotypical. This January, though, finds me in a unique position. 3 months married, freshly back from the Mediteranean and sundry other travel, and starting to pick of the life that was so dramatically rearranged by wedding planning. I'm at a fresh start. The habits we form now will probably shape the rest of our lives together. Resolve is an order.

On the writerly side my novels have lanquished a bit, and my publishing research has been limited to following one or two blogs and reading Writer's Digest. Obviously, something has to change. The best advice I ever heard was that if you want to see something change, do something different.

After a conversation with my brother (who got this idea from the C.S. Lewis Writer's Conference), I have a plan. I'm getting up earlier and adding "daily pages" to my routine. That is to say, after devotions I whip out my laptop and write. Something. Anything.

The idea is to get ideas flowing, words flowing, juices flowing. To get you writing. It will naturally blossom into more.

I've done it a week and I love it.

The only problem is that after 5 minutes I have to put down my laptop or be late for work. One of these days I'm going to forget to look at the clock.

  2. my upcoming birthday has me feeling more at a crossroads than ever. (the big two-five!) i'm picking one thing a month that i want to do more of (or less in some cases) and aim to build throughout the year. (my idea to beat resolution burn-out)

this month's activity is to write more. even if it's just one word. (a caveat included for when school begins again) so far so good. i'm finding my silent voice.

  3. You inspire me. The only problem with the writing before work would be that I'd get started and then wouldn't be able to stop. I used to write a little bit every evening... and that worked for me. It's been a really long time, though.

And Becca, I like your style of monthly goald :-) Much more attainable.
Gabrielle, does taking pictures each week include the editing/posting?
